Whether you use a manual toothbrush or an electric one, over time the bristles become splayed and less effective at cleaning your teeth. So, how often do you change your toothbrush or electric brush head?
Most people don’t replace their toothbrushes often enough and it tends to be one of those things that we notice, make a mental note to sort out, and then swiftly forget! But how often should you be treating yourself to a brand-new toothbrush or brush head? We recommend changing every three to four months, or sooner of the bristles are frayed or splayed.
Why so often?
Your toothbrush goes through a lot. It’s your trusty friend twice a day, cleaning all areas of your mouth. It’s a very hard worker! After around three months of daily cleaning, your toothbrush will undergo a fair bit of wear and tear and it just won’t be as effective at keeping your teeth and gums clean. It’s time to put it into retirement and take on a new recruit.
If you’ve been ill, we recommend getting a new toothbrush sooner to avoid the spread of germs. This is important If your toothbrushes are kept next to others – it will help you to prevent spreading bugs around the whole family!
Top toothbrush tip
To get the best out of your toothbrush, keep it clean. Give it a rinse under tap water once you’ve finished brushing your teeth to remove any lingering toothpaste and saliva. Then store it upright and allow the bristles to air dry naturally.
A new year’s resolution
If you definitely don’t change your toothbrush regularly enough, or simply lose track and aren’t too sure, why not make this one of your new year’s resolutions? It’s a really simple one to aim for and will give your oral health an added boost!
Set a reminder on the calendar in your smart phone to replace your toothbrushes or brush heads every three months. If you stock up with enough toothbrushes at the beginning of the year, you won’t even need to remember to buy one, just grab a new one from your bathroom cupboard!
